Lhasa - Place to Visit in Tibet

It is situated in central Southern Tibet on tributary of Yarlung Zangbo River. It stands 3,360m above sea level and is surrounded by mountain. It has become modern Chinese city as well as the traditional city it has been for centuries. The ancient part of the city has unpaved roads lined white washed houses and traders from all over Tibet meet here to barter their goods. The major attraction in Lhasa is the magnificent Potala Palace, the former seat of Dalai Lama, which dominates the city, was built in 1645 and has 1000 rooms, 10,000 shrines plus 200,000 religious statues. The other attractions in the city are the Bakor Market and the Jhokhang Stupa in Tibet, which is one of the, the holiest and biggest Buddhist shrine built in the seventh century. The Jowo Sakyamuni, which was brought there from Nepal, is housed in the shrine which has golden roof with fine artistic work and mural painting on the wall.

Norbulingka which means ‘The Jewelled Garden consists of 360,000 sq.m of wooden greenery and three palaces once used by the Dalai Lamas as a summer retreat. The Drepung Monastery in the distance of 11 km from the city. Built 14th century by a disciple of Tsong Khapa, is one of the biggest Monastery in Tibet. Its numerous Buddhist statues, ancient scriptures, scroll paintings and other cultural relics will keep you fascinated. The another attraction of Lhasa is Sera Monastery which lies in Northern side in the distance of 6 Km from city center. Sera Monastery have one Buddghist Learning Center which is belevied to be one biggest and important with its most remarkable image is a nine meter figure of Maitreya Buddha.
